HPW in Burkina Faso

New standards, new opportunities.

We source dried mangoes from Burkina Faso for the production of snacks such as bars and fruit balls - and support local farmers in optimising their products and finding a market.

This project is supported by theNetherlands Development Finance Company(FMO).

Raising food safety standards: the key to success.

Burkina Faso produces large quantities of mangoes, but due to its geographical location and lack of experience in marketing fresh fruit, the country has difficulties establishing a sustainable export system.

To counteract this problem, farmers were encouraged to offer dried fruit instead of fresh fruit fifteen years ago. Despite the provision of dryers, the desired export success did not materialise - mainly due to the lack of food safety standards, which have increased internationally over the last fifteen years.

HPW has already been sourcing dried mangoes from small and medium-sized companies for several years in order to process them in a food-safe manner in Ghana. To optimise the process, we are now building a modern short-term warehouse in Burkina Faso to store the produce in a cool and food-safe environment and transport it collectively to Ghana for further hygiene treatment and processing.

The aim is to produce up to 1000 tonnes of high-quality mango snacks from products from Burkina Faso that are consistent in colour, taste and shape. This not only helps to promote the local economy, but also to improve living conditions in Burkina Faso.
